Good afternoon, everyone. According to Legalbet, Baltika is interested in Rostov forward Yegor Golenkov. At first glance the rumour is odd: the striker has just 2 RPL goals all season, and Kaliningrad supposedly needs a man who'll score, not just stand handsomely in the box.
But once you start digging, there does seem to be some sense in it. The other day I listened to Talalaev's interview on Business FM Kaliningrad; it's interesting, have a listen https://music.yandex.ru/album/8967456/track/151719015So, the coach said there that the club badly needs to buy a forward with a Russian passport, that talks are under way with someone, and that they may even have to overpay. And about Offor, it was said he'll most likely leave the team. As for Lacerda: a good forward, but very expensive, so presumably there'll be haggling.
Golenkov isn't the perfect goalscorer. But he's a clear-cut forward for a style built on duels, aerial play, the box and second balls.
Golenkov now: lots of chances, few goals
The central conflict here is obvious: 2 goals from 7.53 xG.🙈 In other words, he should have scored almost 8!!
You can read that two ways. The good one: Golenkov regularly gets into the right zones and finds chances. The bad one: he doesn't convert them. And we're not talking about one or two unlucky episodes but a noticeable shortfall over the long run.
So this isn't a forward who just stands around doing nothing. He receives the ball and the chances are there. The problem comes later: in the final touch and the finish.
But take the Cup as well as the RPL, and the season looks softer
Across all competitions, Golenkov at Rostov:
Still not a goalscorer's numbers, but no longer a complete void either. 8 goal contributions in a season is a workmanlike return for a striker at a mid-table RPL side. It's just that when you're buying a centre-forward, you'd rather "workmanlike" weren't the main compliment.
The 2025/26 season looks like a dip specifically in conversion. He hasn't disappeared in terms of chances. Nor in terms of volume. But the goals have gone missing somewhere. Possibly temporarily. Possibly it's already a problem the new club gets in the package too 😁
Why might Baltika need him?
Golenkov isn't a striker for delicate football between the lines. Not a player who'll carry the ball himself, beat two men (3 successful dribbles all season 😵💫) and settle the episode. His game is simpler and rougher, but that's exactly why it could be useful.
The main plus is aerial duels.
He has 175 aerial duels won. That's a huge volume for a forward. He isn't just tall, he's genuinely used as a target for long passes, crosses and battles in the box.
For Baltika that's logical. The team often needs a forward who:
- holds up clearances;
- wins the air;
- pressures centre-backs;
- helps push the block up;
- creates chaos after crosses;
- gives set pieces a target.
In the RPL all of that is still valuable. You can dream all you like of Barcelona-style combinations, but sometimes the plan is simpler: get the ball to the big striker and see who fights it out. Plus, Talalaev likes forwards like that.
The comparison with Offor explains a lot
Offor is also tall, also a centre-forward, also about physicality.
If you look only at goals, Offor looks better: 3 goals in 702 minutes against Golenkov's 2 in 1,889. No arguing with that.
But in overall involvement in the game Golenkov is higher almost everywhere. He plays more often, shoots more often, gets into the box more often, creates more chances, helps teammates more and does far more work in the air.
Offor is a forward for moments. It just hasn't worked out for him, it HASN'T 🫠Golenkov is a forward for structure.
And this is where it becomes clear why Baltika might be looking at him in particular. This isn't a replacement in the style of "get the same kind, only more prolific". It's more an attempt to sign a striker you can build a more regular attacking model through.
The price question is the main one
Golenkov is 26, well, 27 this summer. Height 189 cm. Russian passport. Contract with Rostov, according to public data, until the end of 2026. Transfermarkt values him at roughly 1.4 million euros.
If we're talking a sum around 1.2–1.5 million euros, the interest looks sensible. For that money Baltika buys a clear profile: RPL experience, aerial presence, physicality, volume, a passport, an age with no decline in sight.
If the figure creeps towards 2 million, you have to think.
If it's 3 million euros, that's overkill. For that money you want more than a forward who wins the air and racks up xG. You want a man who scores at least somewhere near that xG.
The optimal scheme is a fixed fee plus bonuses. For example:
1.3–1.5 million euros + bonuses for goals, goal contributions and team results.
That way Baltika doesn't overpay up front, and Rostov keeps a chance to top up the money if Golenkov gets back to the level of previous seasons.
