Baltika vs Pari NN: 5 thoughts about the match
I don't think this will be a pretty match.
But I'm almost certain it will be a very revealing one.
At home Baltika will try to turn the game not into an exchange of individual attacks but into a long series of equally unpleasant episodes. Flank, delivery, clearance, second ball, another delivery. Pari NN's job is not so much to respond to that as to stop the match ever getting onto those rails.
1. The table doesn't lie here
Sometimes before matches like this you want to dig for a hidden intrigue deeper than the table. But it doesn't always work out =)
As things stand Baltika is fourth: 43 points after 23 rounds, 32 scored, 11 conceded. At home it's an almost perfect picture: 7 wins, 4 draws, 0 defeats. Pari NN is 14th: 20 points, goal difference 18:37. Away from home - 2 wins, 9 defeats, just 5 goals scored in total.
Baltika looks like a team with clear, stable football. Pari NN looks like a team that can produce a good spell and then, within a week, fall apart from a 3:0 over Krylia to a 0:5 against Krasnodar. That's not just a difference in points. It's a difference in the teams' reliability.
2. Baltika is dangerous not with the first action but with the next one
Baltika is unpleasant not because it's more refined or passes better. It's unpleasant because almost any ordinary episode of theirs doesn't end straight away. Flank, delivery, clearance, second ball, another delivery. Throw-in, battle, lay-off, another attack. You think you've cleared it - and you're immediately defending the same zone again.
That's an important difference. Many teams attack in order to create a chance. Baltika often attacks in order to keep you pinned near your own goal for another twenty seconds. And that's a different type of pressure - less ornate, but far more exhausting.
That's where all their logic comes from. A 3-4-3, quick ball out to the wing, lots of deliveries into the box, a constant life in the second phase. Beveev's long throw-ins aren't exotica at all but a working tool. Everything there is thought out in advance: who picks up the second ball, who covers, who presses after the clearance.
And that, essentially, is Baltika's strongest weapon: not the delivery itself, but what happens after it.
3. Gil makes this football even more dangerous and unpleasant
If Baltika lived only on the flanks and second balls, it would already be hard. But it also has Gil, and that adds an entirely different type of threat.
His value isn't that he dishes out subtle passes. His value is that he's constantly looking for the run in behind. So Baltika is dangerous not only when it smothers you with repetition, but also the moment the opponent opens up even slightly.
And that matters. Because the hosts don't need to fiddle about with the ball for long to move it forward. They can grind out the second ball, or they can switch the game into depth with a single movement. For an opponent that's a very nasty combination: you're forced to live under sticky pressure while constantly remembering the space behind you.
4. The worst thing for Pari NN is to try to play too correctly
This is where the visitors' main problem begins.
On paper Shpilevsky's idea has been clear since the summer: 4-4-2 without the ball, with the ball a shift to 3-4-3 or even 3-1-6, narrow wingers, width from the full-backs, a quick vertical ball after winning possession. All of it looks logical. The problem is that under real pressure this construction too often loses its cleanness.
Against Rostov there was an almost direct example. The team came out in a 4-3-3, and after the match Shpilevsky himself admitted the mistake both in the shape and in the choice of players. He also said something important: the team needs to be able to play more simply.
Against Baltika that's a basic condition of survival.
Because here it's dangerous to try to be too correct. One slow turn. One square pass under pressure. One poor touch by the touchline. And that's it - the match is back at your box, another delivery, another second ball, another repeat.
So the best plan for Pari NN isn't to look cleverer. The best plan is not to let the game become monotonous. Where possible - play out through short and medium passes. Where it isn't - don't be shy about simplifying the episode: an early ball forward to Balboa or Olusegun, a second ball for Lesovoy and Ticic, a quick transition instead of long control.
In matches like this, aesthetics very easily become a trap.
5. But Baltika has a weakness. And it grew out of its own strength
That's what makes the match more interesting than the table suggests.
The more aggressively Baltika collects the second ball, the higher it pushes its flanks, the more tightly it packs players around the ball, the more space remains behind that density. Above all - behind the wing-backs and next to the outside centre-backs.
That's where Pari NN should strike.
Not through pretty positional attacks.
Not through long build-up.
But through one quick break after winning the ball.
If the visitors create anything genuinely unpleasant for the hosts at all, it will almost certainly come from exactly here: a quick pass forward, a switch to the free flank, an attack into the space behind. In other words, not arguing with Baltika in its own football, but breaking out of it at the first opportunity.
And there's one more important nuance. After the 2:2 in Makhachkala, Baltika's staff said openly that the team relaxed too early. That's a signal too. If the hosts go ahead and ease off the intensity a little, Pari NN will get a chance. Not a huge one. But a chance.
Who adapts better?
In the overall pattern - Baltika.
It has more ways of moving the ball. Through the flank, through the second phase, through Gil, through set pieces and throw-ins. Pari NN, in that sense, depends more heavily on how cleanly it can get through the transition episodes.
But there's an important correction. Talalaev is suspended for four matches after his dismissal against CSKA. Which means that in terms of urgent correction from the touchline, the hosts' advantage is slightly smaller than usual.
Conclusion
The pattern of the match is fairly easy to read.
Baltika will try to make its attack continuous.
Pari NN will try to break that continuity as early as possible.
If Baltika starts regularly keeping the ball near the opposition box after the first clearance, it will get its match quite quickly. If Pari NN holds on to a sticky 0:0, doesn't let the hosts live on second balls and at least a few times in a row breaks cleanly into the vacated zones, the game will become far more even than the table suggests.
