Baltika lost 0:1 to Lokomotiv. Andrei Mostovoy scored in the 85th minute, but reducing the match to a single episode would be too easy.
The hosts ran more, pressed more successfully, won the ball back more often and reached dangerous territory far more frequently. But Lokomotiv created the better chances: 1.03 xG against 0.66. Baltika won the space but couldn't make use of it in front of the opposition goal.
Talalaevball worked. Up to the box
Talalaevball isn't possession for possession's sake. It's football in which you don't need to hold the ball longer than the opponent in order to play in their half.
Lokomotiv had the ball 58% of the time, Baltika 42%. But the Kaliningrad side entered the opposition half 63 times, reached the final quarter 44 times and the box 18 times. The visitors: 41, 23 and 10.
The pattern was recognisable: tackle, second ball, pressure, go again. Baltika made 68 interceptions, 73 recoveries and 47 ball regains in the opposition half. In the first half the hosts successfully completed 11 of 18 pressing actions. Lokomotiv managed only two successful pressing attempts out of six all match.
Visually it seemed Baltika were about to force it: the ball kept coming back into Lokomotiv's half, the hosts collected the second ball and started the next attack. But each new approach almost always ended where the previous one had. The pressure kept building - the chances didn't.
From 58 positional attacks Baltika managed just two shots. With 18 box entries - 0.66 xG. Set pieces worked better: six shots from 19 such attacks. The hosts won territory well but barely opened Loko up in open play.
The legs held up
Baltika ran 115.2 km against Lokomotiv's 111.6 km. After the break the team didn't fade: 58.0 km against the visitors' 56.8 km. In bursts and sprints the advantage was also with the hosts - 10.7 km against 9.4 km.
Baltika did almost 15 km more work in the defensive phase. That's not just a running number. It's the price of this kind of football: get back after a loss, win the ball back, take the second ball, don't let the opponent turn comfortably, and attack again.
But energy is no substitute for the final action. Lokomotiv ran less and got into dangerous zones less often, yet their six shots produced 1.03 xG. Baltika's nine shots produced only 0.66
Nagaytsev saw the same match
Yuri Nagaytsev didn't put the defeat down to bad luck after the game. He noted Baltika's advantage from set pieces and second balls in the first half, plus several good chances in the second.
The senior coach specifically recalled one attack: Maksim Petrov rolled the ball to Fahd Moufi, and there, in Nagaytsev's words, "you had to score, of course".
That fits the overall picture well: Baltika weren't helpless in front of the opposition goal, but they didn't turn their best episodes into a goal.
Nagaytsev also made an important qualification about Mostovoy's goal: the ball should never have got into the box in the first place, so the responsibility can't be pinned on one player. That adjusts Beveev's report card: FotMob logged an error leading to a goal, but the staff saw a collectively lost defensive chain rather than a single failure by one footballer.

By FotMob's model, in the goal episode Latyshonok should have been saving rather than conceding: 0.30 xGOT and −0.70 goals prevented. I think the deflection off a defender's leg got badly in the way. But in the build-up he was good: 22 accurate passes from 23, including 11 of 12 long ones. The first pass didn't let him down. What was missing was a save in the only decisive episode.
Eduardo Anderson - 6.80

One of Baltika's most useful defenders. Four clearances, three blocks, one interception and six regains. Anderson ran 9.84 km and added distance in the second half. In passing - 25 accurate from 33 and two passes into the box.

11.15 km, 1.45 km of bursts and sprints, 70 touches, two tackles, two interceptions, one shot on target. Beveev put in an enormous shift. But FotMob logged an error leading to a goal. Nagaytsev rightly qualified it: the blame can't be hung on one man alone, because the ball should never have got into the box at all. Beveev was the last link, but not the only participant in a lost defensive chain.

Baltika's best player. Two successful dribbles out of two, one chance created, two shots, one on target, 16 carries and 241.9 m of progression. Murid took risks, hence his 22 losses and only 50% pass accuracy. But it was he, more often than anyone, who tried to break Lokomotiv's lines rather than simply play the ball back.

The captain held the centre until the 89th minute. 11.17 km - the most of any Baltika outfield player. Four tackles, three successful, four regains, one interception, one key pass and four aerial duels won out of five. Five fouls and 12 losses - the price of a role in which he constantly went into contact and closed down transitions.

What this match says about Baltika
The match against Lokomotiv showed that Talalaevball now works not only against teams of their own level.
Baltika outran the opponent, locked Lokomotiv in their own half for long spells, won the ball, won the second balls and forced them to play uncomfortable football. With 42% possession the hosts entered the final quarter of the pitch 44 times and the box 18 times. That isn't a random spike but a working system.
Yes, in the decisive metres the quality wasn't there yet: 58 positional attacks produced only two shots. But the team itself regularly got to where it's supposed to get - the opposition box. And that's no small part of the job.
Talalaevball gave Baltika the ability to press Lokomotiv on equal terms, a side that had the ball for most of the match. The next step is clear: a slightly more accurate final pass, a slightly cooler decision, slightly better finishing.
If Baltika keep this volume, this pressing and this ability to bring the game back into the opposition half, the goals in matches like this will come. Because the team already knows how to create the main thing - the conditions in which a strong opponent becomes uncomfortable.
